Investors should becareful when comparing YTD ratios if not much of the year has occurred as research shows that YTD measures are more sensitive to early periods than late.

Year to Date Return (YTD) is the total return generated from holding a security from the beginning of the current fiscal year. In other words, YTD Return represents the capital appreciation of your investments from the start of the current fiscal year.

A more reliable light to use this in is with fundamental analysis because that will shed light on the reasons for the returns being the way they are. You can take a look at items such as earnings per share or revenue to gauge why the year to date return is what it is. Now if you apply this to a technical chart, you may not get the same results.
